The Marin County Sheriff's Office: The Marin County Sheriff's Office is committed to partnering with our communities to provide leadership and excellence in public safety. The department is divided into three major bureaus; Administrative and Support Services, Detention Services, and Field Services in addition to operating the countywide Major Crime Task Force. The responsibilities of the Sheriff's Office Bureaus include providing general law enforcement services in the unincorporated communities of Marin County, maintaining the county jail, providing security to the Superior Court, operating a countywide communications division, performing death investigations under the purview of the Coroner, operating a documentary services division consisting of records, warrants, civil units, and more. ABOUT THE POSITION
The Property & Evidence Technician provides support to law enforcement staff by receiving, logging, storing, and managing the integrity of property and evidence, digital media evidence, and other items of property and evidence held by the Sheriff. This position supervises the of chain of custody, discovery, evidence transportation, and proper storage. It requires frequent contact with the public as well as outside agencies, working with confidential records/investigations, interpretation, and review of legal or court documents, the processing of complex legal requests, property & evidence records management, knowledge of statutes and laws relative to case management, technical office support to one of several departments and performs other related work as required.
There will be one (1) full-time, regular hire vacancy.
ABOUT YOU
Our Highly Qualified Candidate: The ideal candidate will have general knowledge of California Penal Codes, Evidence Codes, Civil Codes and other county ordinances governing public property, release of property/evidence and disposal. The ideal candidate has a strong grasp of the Microsoft Office suite of products, with an emphasis on Word, Excel and Outlook. The successful candidate is detailed-oriented, organized, dependable, and can handle several tasks simultaneously often with interruption. Additionally, they will work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment, possess strong interpersonal skills and good judgement. The candidate has the flexibility to successfully adapt to changing work assignments and can execute progressively difficult tasks with increasing independence and reliability. They must have a reputation for honesty, trustworthiness, and integrity. In addition, an ideal candidate will be able to deal with the public, representatives of other departments and agencies, occasionally where relations may be confrontational or strained. Basic knowledge of principles and procedures of stock control systems, receiving, storage, inventory, and records management is highly desirable. The ideal candidate has experience in reading, interpreting and processing a wide variety of complex legal documents.
QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:
- Principles and procedures of stock control systems and record keeping;
- Techniques of receiving, storing, inventorying, safeguarding and disposing of personal and other types of property.
- General knowledge of California Penal Code, Civil Code, various County ordinances, and other laws governing public property, release of property and evidence and destruction of narcotics.
Ability to:
- Learn basic handling of firearms, narcotics and related paraphernalia, storage and destruction of hazardous materials and bio-medical items and materials.
- Explain and apply departmental policies and procedures including court procedures and process of obtaining release of property; maintain complete and accurate records.
- Operate teletype and computer terminals and type at an acceptable rate; read and comprehend legal documents, laws and ordinances; exercise good judgment.
- Make accurate observations; work well with minimal supervision.
- Deal effectively and tactfully with employees, officials of public agencies, attorneys, property owners and the public.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Two years of responsible clerical experience processing a wide variety of legal documents, plus one year experience inventorying property. Two years of experience in a law enforcement or law administrative agency receiving, storing, releasing and inventorying property held for safekeeping may substitute for the three years experience listed above that provide knowledge and skills listed below.
Experience processing a variety of legal documents within a law enforcement agency is highly desired.IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Background Process: Applicants successful in testing will be subject to a thorough and rigorous background investigation which may include, but is not limited to, a criminal records check, interviews with friends, relatives, neighbors and employers; verification of DMV records; and overall employment and education history. Drug Use Standards: No use of illegal drugs within the timelines described in the Pre-Employment Drug Use Guidelines. Applicants successful in testing will be given a polygraph examination and/or computerized voice stress analysis and will be asked about illegal drug use.
Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
