DESCRIPTION
Under the general guidance and direction of a Lieutenant or Sergeant, proactively enforces criminal and traffic laws, responds to service calls, and performs investigative functions to contribute to the safety and welfare of citizens and visitors and the security of residential and commercial property. Officers are required to take a problem-solving approach to the situations they encounter daily and interact with the residents and visitors within the City to address relevant concerns facing the community.

SALARY: $31.71 - $42.75 Hourly; $65,956.80 - $88,920.00 Annually 

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs patrol functions, investigations, traffic control and enforcement, and related activities.
  • Works on various shifts.
  • May be required to render first aid.
  • May conduct preliminary investigations.
  • Responsible for the detection, apprehension, and incarceration of those who perpetrate crimes involving felonies, misdemeanors, and other acts of public misconduct.
  • Maintains availability by radio or telephone for response to emergencies or precedents.
  • Carries out duties conforming to federal, state, county, and city ordinances and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Patrols city streets, parks, and commercial and residential areas to preserve the peace and enforce the law.
  • Interrogates suspects, interviews witnesses, preserve evidence, conducts follow-up investigations, develops leads, searches crime scenes, prepares cases, and testify in court.
  • Prepares various reports and records, including Officer's Daily logs, reports of investigations, OVI reports, tow reports, etc.
  • Performs community functions and related public relations details.
  • Coordinates activities with other officers, law enforcement agencies, city departments, municipal and county court officials, business and civic leaders, and the public.
  • Keeps supervisory personnel informed, provides mutual aid assistance in emergencies, and facilitates the acquisition of departmental equipment and supplies.
  • Create and maintain accurate records as appropriate.
  • Interprets Municipal, State, and Federal guidelines to contribute to compliance.
  • Must possess the ability to understand and carry out detailed, oral, and written instructions.
  • Must possess the ability to exercise sound reasoning and good judgment.
  • Must have and display the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors and peers.
  • Represent and commit to building a culture inclusive of diversity, equity, inclusion, ethics, and trust.
  • Meet all job safety requirements and standards that pertain to the essential functions of the position.
  • Regular and punctual attendance is an essential requirement of this classification.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs any related duties as assigned.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

  • Police cruiser, handgun, handcuffs, pepper spray, patrol rifle, and other weapons as required.
  • In-house computer system, mobile data terminal, and personal computer.
  • Breathalyzer, fingerprint lift kits, speed measuring devices, evidence collection kits, and specialized equipment as needed or directed.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be between the ages of 21 and 40 at the time of the original appointment to the position of Police Officer with the City of Cuyahoga Falls. Must be a United States citizen. Must be able to read and write in English. Must have a high school diploma or equivalency. Must be of good moral character. Must be able to meet the physical demands of the job.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Valid OPOTC (Ohio Police Officer Training Commission) certification; at least one year of experience as a sworn, certified law enforcement officer within the last three years preceding the date of original application; and an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or a Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field from an accredited College or University; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

  • Knowledge: Modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • Skills: Operation of the tools and equipment listed below.
  • Abilities: Learn and apply applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; ability to perform required necessary physical demands of employment; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, and supervisors; exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions; follow verbal and written instructions; and learn geographical directions.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: Must possess or obtain a valid State of Ohio driver's license and the ability to maintain continuing eligibility under the City's driver eligibility standards.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be a non-smoker and non-tobacco/nicotine user, including but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, pipes, snuff, etc., and refrain from using all tobacco/nicotine products for the duration of employment with the City.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, listen, stand, walk, handle objects, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee's visual acuity includes close, distant, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to have the ability to hear sufficiently (unaided or aided), understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds (e.g., ambient background noise such as highway traffic, sirens, "crowd noise"; being able to determine from which direction speech or noise (i.e. cries for help, gunshots, screams, audible alarms, sirens, etc.) is coming from is required. 

This position is sedentary while in a patrol vehicle, but it can be very active and requires agility and physical strength to work under adverse conditions. Must have the endurance to sustain physical effort for a substantial period and restrain prisoners. Must also be able to safely, accurately, and effectively discharge a firearm in the line of duty.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions, which range from moderate climate and temperature to extreme cold, rain, humidity, and heat. The employee may work near moving mechanical parts.
The employee frequently works in precarious places and is occasionally exposed to explosives, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic substances, and vibrations. The noise level in the work environment ranges from quiet to moderate to noisy.
