Operations Support – Modeling and Engineering Engineer/Specialist/Analyst
Description
The Modeling and Engineering Support Engineer/Specialist/Analyst position will serve within Georgia Power’s Power Delivery Operations Support Organization on the Modeling & Engineering Support (MES) team.
The MES team is responsible for updating and maintaining the transmission control systems displays within the Energy Management System (EMS) platform utilized by Georgia Powers’ transmission control center operators to ensure the safe monitoring and operation of the electric grid. EMS platforms utilized by the team include Siemens Spectrum, OSI Monarch, and other internal tools.
By providing comprehensive support to both internal and external business partners, the MES team ensures that system models are accurately updated within the EMS platform to reflect the proper operational conditions of the power grid.
The position will require occasional availability during off hours to assist with unforeseen situations that need immediate attention and storm restoration efforts. Additionally, the role will involve periodic travel for training and supporting projects as required.
Job Responsibilities
- Perform modeling and engineering tasks associated with ensuring the EMS system databases and displays accurately reflect real-time system conditions. Examples include:
- Creation and maintenance of SCADA systems displays for substations, transmission lines, etc.
- Retirement of equipment and rating changes.
- Alarms and controls associated with relay modernizations, communication devices, etc.
- Display enhancements, ad hoc requests, and troubleshooting of abnormalities.
- Database management.
- Be a primary point of contact for coordinating work within assigned area of responsibility including the Integrated Transmission System (ITS)participants.
- Build and establish productive relationships with customers and communicate effectively and promptly to understand and support their needs.
- Foster constant innovation in processes and tools by means of automation, programming, and collaboration.
- Support employee-led safety culture, diversity and inclusion, and human performance initiatives.
- Support projects/committees in Operations and across Southern Company as required.
- Availability for storm restoration efforts.
Job Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor’s or associate degree in a technical field preferred.
- A degree in an engineering field is a plus.
Experience:
- Working knowledge of transmission systems, transmission operations and/or protection and controls is preferred.
- Proficiency with Siemens, OSI or other EMS platforms is a plus.
- Experience with SCADA or industrial control systems is a plus.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications is a plus.
- Experience with coding and programming is a plus, particularly with SQL, Python, and PERL
