Summary:
The Director, Quality & Performance Improvement provides leadership, coordination and implementation for accreditation activities, performance improvement and patient safety plans for the hospital. The Director works collaboratively with leadership to ensure regulatory compliance, readiness and accreditation, and to implement a best-in-class performance improvement and safety program. Works closely with the Chief Medical Officer and other leaders to develop, monitor, and educate others on the use of patient data systems that drive improvement and reporting of patient outcomes through the use of evidence-based data and scorecards.
Responsibilities:
1. Provides direction and coordination for the development and implementation of the performance improvement and patient safety plan for Wayne UNC Health Care.
2. Annually assists in setting goals for the PI Department in strategic planning process on an annual basis.
3. Participates in divisional policy for mutation and implementation. (??? clarify)
4. Ensures the Nursing standards of patient care and standards of nursing practice are consistent with recognized professional standards and practiced consistently in nursing services in conjunction with other Directors of Nursing.
5. Participates actively on appointed nursing, hospital and medical staff committees.
6. Facilitates teams as directed.
7. Serves as a professional role model in all actions.
8. Provides leadership in the design, measurement and evaluation of methodologies for improving organizational performance. Supports and promotes initiatives to contain medical costs while improving access, convenience, efficiency, satisfaction and outcomes for patients. Collaborates with other hospital leaders to include the framework of performance improvement in the Strategic Plan. Integrates centralized functions into hospital operations, including quality assessment/improvement and clinical decision support. (move up to top 3?)
9. Directs and oversees patent safety initiatives and the organization’s contact for staff and patients.
10. Evaluates and implements appropriate educational offerings to support PI activities in an ongoing manner. (combine with 16?)
11. Works in collaboration with the inter-professional health care team to support resource utilization and quality improvement. Utilizes various information systems to collect and analyze data.
12. Collaborates with medical staff performance improvement efforts. Provides oversight of all hospital committees to ensure that PI efforts are coordinated.
13. Interfaces with all department directors at the Hospital. Assists with PI efforts as identified. Redundant?
14. Supervises development /implementation of PI and Infection Control plans for the hospital.
15. Analyses PI data from a clinical perspective and explains it to providers and clinicians. Analyzes and summarizes PI data from a clinical perspective. Prepares and distributes reports/charts to the PI committee, Medical Staff PI and Quality Council. (do these groups still exist? Or…to relevant committees and leaders.
16. Provides educational support to all departments with regard to PI as related to regulatory standards. (Combine with 10?)
17. Annually reviews the PI and Patient Safety Plan for Wayne UNC Health Care. Reviews the departmental indicators on a regular basis and makes recommendations as needed to ensure PI efforts are effective.
18. Chairs the Hospital PI Committee and provides direction as applicable. (Combine with 5)
19. Develops the system for defining and monitoring departmental indicators.
20. Annually assists in preparation and review of annual salary, expense and supply budget for the PI Department. Reviews monthly variances for PI budget. (

Education
Master’s degree and Bachelor’s of Science required.
Licensure/Certification
Current Registered Nurse license in North Carolina required.
Experience
At least 8 years experience as a RN with 5 or more years of experience in a management capacity required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Comprehensive understanding of performance and quality improvement tools.
• Considerable knowledge of best practices in patient safety.
• Ability to perform data analysis and prepare and present reports for a variety of audiences,
• Leadership qualities, e.g., maturity, job knowledge, professionalism, collaboration, communication skills, etc. to lead, guide and motivate others at all organizational levels.
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple simultaneous responsibilities.
• Excellent and effective communication skills, both written and verbal
• Highly proficient with MS Office and analytical tools, with the ability to learn new software rapidly.
Valid NC Driver’s License: Yes
If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
