Job Description:

The Costume Stock Manager/Draper/Stitcher (CSMDS) at Boston Conservatory at Berklee (BCB) manages costume stock and storage in locations on and off campus, ensuring proper recording, tracking and usage arrangements. The CSMDS maintains the condition and inventory of BCB costume stock and identifies items for BCB rehearsals and productions as needed. The CSMDS is also responsible for excellently realizing costume designs, from sketch to completion, of BCB productions across theater, dance and opera, completing all costume drafting, draping and construction projects as assigned across productions.

As part of the Performance Services department, the CSMDS reports to the Costume Shop Manager, collaborates closely with the Wardrobe Manager and full costume shop staff; works closely with the full Production team and interfaces with directors, designers, and students. The CSMDS may supervise student workers. This is an hourly, non-exempt position

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Manage costume stockrooms and storage in locations on- and off-campus. Plans and suggests future improvements for efficiency and safety in costume stock.

    • Coordinates and oversees costume rentals, returns, appointments and arrangements

    • Oversees the return and restock of costume rentals

    • Oversees and trains student stock managers

    • Revises and maintains costume rental procedures and associated documentation, with Costume Shop Manager

    • Pulls costumes for rehearsals and productions, as requested by CSM or ACSM

    • Realize the designs for all shop supported productions across theater, music and dance

    • Complete all costume drafting, draping and construction projects as assigned

    • Perform all stitching, alterations, tailoring, and craft notes from costume fittings

    • Take and record student measurements for all shop supported productions

    • Attend costume fitting as needed to assist designers in marking and notating costume alterations, and to fit mockups and final versions of constructed items

    • Support the training and instruction of the student workforce in costume organization, construction and alteration

    • Uphold proper safety measures and assist with shop housekeeping. Ensure stockrooms are well organized and updated as needed, and assist in maintaining inventory of supplies, stock fabrics, notions, and office materials.

    • Attend Tech/Dress Rehearsals occasionally, in consultation with the Costume Shop Manager, for troubleshooting, evaluation, and designer coordination

    • Support the cleaning of all costumes, returning and restocking of rented costumes for each production

    • Support senior costume shop staff with tasks as needed

    • Contribute to the future planning and strategy of the BCB Costume Shop


    MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s Degree: BFA, concentration in Costume Design, Theater/Production Design, or Fashion Design or equivalent experience

    • Professional costume experience preferred

    • Experience with costume stock work preferred

    KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

    • Proficiency in pattern drafting and draping required

    • Proficiency on industrial machines required

    • Competency in all aspects of Costume operations in theater, dance and opera

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

    • Extremely detail oriented, paperwork-driven and able to anticipate needs

    • Ability to remain flexible in a fast-paced environment

    • Ability to work well under pressure and with large groups of diverse personalities and priorities

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Student workers

    • Costume Shop Interns

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    • Indoor environments, some with low light: costume shop, stages, backstage areas, dressing rooms

    SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, ETC:

    • Some nights and weekends required

    • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required

    • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds and climb ladders up to 12ft

    • Seated and standing positions, crouching, kneeling
