Job Summary

The School of Kinesiology (SoK) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Center and Laboratory Manager to oversee the Roybal Center (roybal.umich.edu) and Motivation Laboratory (kines.umich.edu/motivation) under the direction of Dr. David Conroy. Our research focuses on developing, evaluating, and disseminating technology-based behavioral interventions aimed at making it easier and more enjoyable for adults to lead lifestyles that support health and well-being.

The School of Kinesiology is the fourth-largest undergraduate admitting school at the University of Michigan, with approximately 1250 undergraduate students and 152 graduate students across our four programs of Applied Exercise Science, Athletic Training, Movement Science, and Sport Management.

    Responsibilities*

    (EF) = Essential Function

    Note, that as this is a new position, we anticipate that responsibilities and the percentage of time spent on specific job functions may shift and change over time.

    Project & Operations Management (35%):

    • Plan and run regular center/lab meetings; organize annual Roybal Center meeting (EF)
    • Plan, schedule and track research activities to optimize productivity; manage available resources efficiently (EF)
    • Develop, manage, and refine standard operating procedures; assist the director in prioritizing tasks and manage logistical arrangements (EF)
    • Oversee and contribute as needed to applications and reports for Institutional Review Board (IRB); monitor and ensure compliance with internal regulations (EF)
    • Assist in preparing reports to funders, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF), using their systems (eConnect, CROMS, RPPRs, clinicaltrials.gov); ensure compliance with publication requirements from funders, such as NIH Manuscript Submission (NIHMS) (EF)


    Communications (20%):

    • Oversee center and lab websites, and preparation of social media posts and newsletters (EF)
    • Serve as a liaison with various offices and labs within the School of Kinesiology, the University, and external partners (EF)
    • Edit copy for papers, press releases, and other communications (EF)
    • Record-keeping - maintain and organize electronic and paper information storage systems (EF)


    Personnel Management (20%):

    • Collaborate with the SoK HR team for recruiting, hiring, and training research staff (EF)
    • Supervise and manage center/lab staff and trainees (EF)
    • Assist the director in providing feedback and supporting career development (EF)


    Financial Management (15%):

    • Manage inventory across projects; collaborate with the SoK Finance team for contract and vendor setup; submit & reconcile purchases (EF)
    • Collaborate with SoK Research and Finance teams to manage budgets and project spending (EF)
    • Assist in the preparation of grant applications in collaboration with center/lab director and SoK research team (EF)

    Other duties (10%):

    • Represent the center/lab when the director is not available (EF)
    • Provide support as needed to the center/lab director (EF)

      Required Qualifications*

      • Bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of relevant experience, or graduate degree with relevant experience
      • Proven experience in these areas:
        • project and operations management, preferably in a research setting
        • regulatory processes and compliance
        • financial management and budgeting skills
        • meticulous record-keeping and progress reporting
        • effective personnel management and leadership
      • High level of proficiency with technology and software (Word, Excel, Google Workspace, Adobe Acrobat, Zoom)
      • Proven success with contributing to a positive workplace culture and ability to consistently demonstrate our School's Core Values

      REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:

      • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication, and editing skills
      • Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and dependability
      • Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of students, faculty and staff in an inclusive and trust-inspiring manner
      • Works well collaborating with others as well as able to operate independently
      • Detail-oriented while performing tasks
      • Excellent organizational and follow-through skills
      • Ability to work in fast-paced and complex environments

        Desired Qualifications*

        • Experience with website maintenance
        • Experience with social media posting for a professional organization
        • Experience with REDCap and/or Qualtrics

          Modes of Work

          Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

          Additional Information

          This is a term-limited appointment, funded for 12 months; the initial appointment may be extended depending on the availability of research funds and successful performance. The general salary range for this position is $80,000 - $92,000. An offer may be extended outside of this range based on equity, experience, knowledge and skills for the position. You are encouraged to discuss salary questions to honor understanding and transparency throughout the recruiting process. This position will be primarily on-site.
