Assistant Director, GLBTA Pride CenterDepartment Summary
From Bridgewater State University's inception in 1840 by Horace Mann as one of the first normal schools in America to the current day, BSU has worked to ensure that our students receive an accessible, affordable, and exceptional education. The successful candidate will have the abilities to contribute to this work collaboratively to meet the needs of BSU's increasingly diverse population of students.
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Director, the Assistant Director will provide support and coordination that impacts the success of the GLBTA Pride Center and its culturally diverse students. In collaboration with campus entities, the Assistant Director will lead innovative efforts to provide an integrated approach directed at improving LGBTQIA+ student outreach and retention, academic success, leadership and professional development, and enrichment for all students. The Assistant Director will work cross-divisionally and collaboratively with all campus constituencies to implement assessment-based experiences that prepare students for their careers and civic engagement in society. This position uses a student-informed, data-driven, and racial equity-minded approaches in all communication and service efforts. This is a student-facing position and requires in-person engagement. Remote work once a week permitted with Director's approval and is based on the needs of the department.Standard schedule: Monday - Friday, 9:00 - 5:00 (Some evenings and weekend hours are required)
Remote Work Status: Remote work eligible, Hybrid, 1day per week
This position is a full-time, 12-month, exempt, Non-Essential, APA unit position and is subject to the terms of that union agreement.
Essential Duties
1. Provide oversight to the retention and success of students by leading the LGBTQIA+ Student Support Group (non-clinical).2. Assist in leading college transition programs and other initiatives that support the retention and success of all students with emphasis on issues germane to LGBTQIA+ students and LGBTQIA+ students of color through an intercultural, equity-minded framework of practice. This includes serving as a thought partner in strategic planning and assessment of new initiatives and campaigns, with an emphasis on supporting queer racial equity, visibility, and awareness.3. Assist with outreach activities and all recruiting initiatives of prospective students, current students, parents, and all constituents, including information sessions, GSA Day, Open House, Admitted Students Day, campus tours, virtual office appointments, and Zoom sessions. Some evening and weekend hours are required.
4. Assist in the planning and execution of departmental and campus-wide
programs and events including those held in the evenings and on weekends, that promote equity-minded student success outcomes such as inclusion, belonging, retention, and persistence.
5. Collaborate with inter-divisional, campus, and external personnel on campus-wide LGBTQIA+ events, such as Big Queer Welcome, LGBTQ History Month, Transgender Day of Remembrance, Transgender Day of Visibility, National Coming Out Day, Queer Prom, Lavender Graduation, and similar programs that promote inclusion, belonging, retention, and graduation.
6. Provide supervision to GA and Student Workers. This includes hiring, training, guidance on implementation of programmatic ideas, leadership development opportunities, and providing performance feedback on an on-going basis.
7. Oversee the center's marketing strategies to highlight all Pride Center programs and initiatives.
8. Work in partnership with the Director ensure the Pride Center advances departmental strategic priorities.
9. Identify emerging and best practices of LGBTQIA+ student success and share them with the Director for consideration.
10. Provide leadership to the office, including day-to-day management of the office and decision making in the absence of the director.
11. Participate in the BSU Racial Equity Justice Institute.
12. Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Three (3) years' experience with providing services and programs for student populations, including an emphasis on LGBTQIA+ students and students of color, in an educational setting.
- Experience in utilizing evidence-based practices to work effectively with students to support their success.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with implementing best practices to support inclusion and academic success of members of the LGBTQIA+ community with intersecting identities such as people of color, individuals with a range of abilities, multilingual people, first-generation, and minoritized individuals through a racial-equity minded, student oriented framework.
- Experience designing and assessing educational and direct service strategies intended to address the needs of diverse LGBTQIA+ student populations.
- Strong collaboration, organization, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated computer skills utilizing a typical suite of Microsoft Office products, including Microsoft Teams, and social media expertise.

Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in student personnel or related field strongly preferred.
- Linguistic proficiency in Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole and/or French.
- Three (3) years' experience with providing services and programs for LGBTQIA+ populations, including an emphasis on students of color, at a college or university.
- Experience working in a diverse and inclusive team environment.
- Experience working collaboratively within a large organization actively engaged in equity and justice efforts.
- Experience supervising staff and/or student workers.
- Experience with a broad range of computer programs, such as Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, and EAB Navigate.
